About Saint Pedro Calungsod

Saint Pedro Calungsod (c. 1654 – April 2, 1672) was a Filipino Catholic migrant, sacristan, and missionary catechist who, along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672. Born in the Visayas region of the Philippines, Pedro was a young catechist who assisted Spanish Jesuit missionaries in their evangelization efforts.

At around age 14, Pedro joined the Jesuit mission to the Ladrones Islands (now the Marianas). He served as a catechist, teaching the Chamorro people about Christianity, while also performing practical tasks like building churches, hunting, and assisting in Mass. On April 2, 1672, Pedro and Father San Vitores were killed by two native Chamorros opposed to Christianity. According to accounts, Pedro could have escaped but chose to stay with the priest. He was beatified in 2000 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012, becoming the second Filipino saint after Saint Lorenzo Ruiz.

"Do not be afraid to become the saints of the new millennium!"

- Pope John Paul II to Filipino youth, which inspired devotion to Pedro Calungsod

"A young layperson who heroically witnessed to Christ in the foreign mission field." - Description of St. Pedro Calungsod
